This Baked Brie Wrapped in Puff Pastry is a decadent appetizer featuring a creamy wheel of brie cheese surrounded by savory prosciutto, sweet fig jam, and flaky puff pastry. Baked until golden and crispy, it makes a perfect warm and indulgent treat for gatherings or special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale

Cheese and Meat

  • 8 oz brie cheese wheel
  • 5 slices prosciutto

Spread and Garnish

  • 34 tbsp fig jam
  • fresh thyme (optional garnish)

Dough and Finishing

  • 1 puff pastry sheet (thawed)
  • 1 beaten egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Heat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
  2. Prepare Pastry and Prosciutto: Place the thawed puff pastry sheet on the lined baking sheet. Arrange three slices of prosciutto in the center of the pastry, which will provide a flavorful layer around the cheese.
  3. Score Brie: Place the brie cheese wheel in the middle of the prosciutto. Using a knife, score the top of the brie with cross hatch marks to allow the jam to penetrate and create a nice texture.
  4. Add Fig Jam: Spoon 3-4 tablespoons of fig jam over the scored top of the brie to add sweetness and complement the savory flavors.
  5. Wrap Brie with Prosciutto: Fold the prosciutto around the brie to encase the jam, adding an extra slice of prosciutto on top for security and additional flavor.
  6. Wrap in Puff Pastry: Carefully wrap the brie and prosciutto bundle like a present with the puff pastry. Trim excess pastry if needed to avoid overly thick areas that won’t bake evenly.
  7. Egg Wash and Slits: Brush the exterior of the puff pastry with beaten egg to achieve a shiny, golden crust. Cut a few shallow slits on top of the pastry for steam to escape during baking.
  8. Bake: Place the prepared pastry on the baking sheet in the oven and bake for about 25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
  9. Serve: Remove from oven and let it rest briefly. Garnish with fresh thyme if desired, then serve warm with crackers or sliced baguette for dipping and enjoyment.

Notes

  • Make sure the puff pastry is fully thawed before using to ensure easy handling and proper baking.
  • Allow the baked brie to rest for 5 minutes after baking to prevent burning your mouth when serving warm cheese.
  • Optional fresh thyme adds an herbal aroma and visual appeal but can be omitted if unavailable.
  • You can substitute fig jam with other fruit preserves like apricot or raspberry for varied flavor profiles.
  • Ensure the slits on pastry are shallow to prevent filling leakage but enough to vent steam.
