Ingredients

Scale

Butter Mixture

  • ½ cup (1 stick / 113 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon coarse Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme
  • 2 teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
  • ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ⅛ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a medium bowl, add the softened butter, coarse Dijon mustard, chopped chives, parsley, fresh thyme, minced garlic, lemon juice, paprika, kosher salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes. Whisk together until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  2. Form Butter Log: Scoop the mixed cowboy butter mixture onto a piece of plastic wrap. Roll and shape the butter into a log, pressing firmly so that it is tightly wrapped. Twist the ends of the plastic wrap to seal.
  3. Chill Butter: Refrigerate the wrapped butter log for at least 2 hours or up to overnight to allow the flavors to meld and the butter to firm up.
  4. Use as Compound Butter: Slice and serve the cowboy butter atop grilled steaks, chicken, vegetables, or corn on the cob for a rich, flavorful finish.
  5. Make a Butter Dip: Alternatively, melt the cowboy butter in the microwave in 20-second increments, stirring between each until fully melted. Use as a dipping sauce or drizzle.
  6. Store Properly: Keep any unused butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days to maintain freshness and flavor.

Notes

  • You can mix the ingredients in a food processor for a smoother texture.
  • Adjust the cayenne pepper and crushed red pepper flakes to control the spiciness.
  • This butter freezes well; thaw before using.
  • Perfect for enhancing the flavor of grilled meats, seafood, roasted vegetables, or baked potatoes.
  • Use fresh herbs for the best flavor, but dried herbs can be substituted in a pinch (reduce quantity by half).
