Ingredients

Scale

Apple Filling

  • 67 medium apples (Granny Smith + Honeycrisp blend)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Crisp Topping

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp fine salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cubed

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Prepare a 9×9-inch baking dish or a similar pie plate; no greasing is necessary.
  2. Prepare Apples: Peel, core, and slice the apples about 1/4-inch thick. Toss the slices in a large bowl with lemon juice, granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg to evenly coat all pieces. Spread this mixture evenly in the baking dish.
  3. Make Crisp Topping: In the same mixing bowl, whisk together the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold, cubed butter, then use forks or your fingers to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Assemble Crisp: Evenly sprinkle the oat topping over the apple filling in the dish. Do not press the topping down; leave it loose and crumbly for a crispy finish.
  5. Bake: Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 40–45 minutes, until the topping is deeply golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
  6. Rest and Serve: Allow the apple crisp to rest for 15–20 minutes so the fruit juices thicken. Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Notes

  • Use a mix of tart and sweet apples like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp for balanced flavor.
  • Cold butter is essential for creating a crumbly, crispy topping.
  • You can substitute the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a nuttier taste.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for added richness.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat before serving.
