Fried Ice Cream is a delightful dessert featuring creamy vanilla ice cream encased in a crispy, cinnamon-spiced cornflake coating. Quick-fried to golden perfection, it offers a delightful contrast of hot, crunchy exterior and cold, smooth interior, perfect for impressing guests or indulging in a unique treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Ice Cream

  • 4 cups vanilla ice cream

Coating

  • 2 cups crushed cornflakes or frosted flakes
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

Frying

  • 1 quart vegetable oil for frying

Optional Toppings

  • Whipped cream
  • Chocolate syrup
  • Maraschino cherries

Instructions

  1. Freeze Ice Cream Balls: Scoop the vanilla ice cream into balls and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Freeze for at least 2 hours until the balls are very firm and easy to handle.
  2. Prepare Coating: In a shallow dish, combine the crushed cornflakes, ground cinnamon, and granulated sugar. Roll each ice cream ball in this mixture, pressing gently to ensure the coating sticks well. Return the coated ice cream balls to the freezer for another 30 minutes to set.
  3. Heat Oil: Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a deep, heavy saucepan to 375°F (190°C). Use a thermometer to maintain the correct temperature for quick frying.
  4. Fry Ice Cream Balls: Fry the coated ice cream balls in the hot oil, one or two at a time, for 15–30 seconds until the coating is golden brown and crispy. Be careful not to overcrowd the oil to maintain temperature.
  5. Drain and Serve: Remove the fried ice cream balls with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve immediately with optional whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and maraschino cherries for an indulgent dessert experience.

Notes

  • Ensure the ice cream is very firm before coating and frying to prevent melting.
  • Use a food-safe thermometer to maintain oil temperature precisely.
  • You can substitute cornflakes with crushed graham crackers or cookie crumbs for variation.
  • Serve immediately as the dessert is best enjoyed while the coating is hot and ice cream remains cold.
  • Use caution when frying to avoid oil splatters and burns.
