Learn four easy methods to shred chicken for your recipes. Whether you prefer using your hands, two forks, a hand mixer, or a stand mixer, we’ve got you covered with step-by-step instructions.

Ingredients

Scale

Using Your Hands:

  • 1 pound cooked chicken*

With Two Forks:

  • 1 pound cooked chicken*

With a Hand Mixer:

  • 1 pound cooked chicken breast or thighs

With a Stand Mixer:

  • 1 pound cooked chicken

Instructions

  1. Using Your Hands: Once the chicken is cooked and cool enough to handle, but still warm, place it on a clean surface like a cutting board or plate. Use your hands to pull the chicken apart into small, even pieces until you’ve shredded it to your desired texture.
  2. With Two Forks: Place your warm, cooked chicken on a sturdy cutting board. Use two forks to pull the chicken apart at the center, continuing to shred into smaller and smaller pieces until the chicken is shredded to your preference.
  3. With a Hand Mixer: Put the cooked chicken breast or thighs into a deep bowl. Use a hand mixer on low speed to carefully break apart the chicken into shreds. If necessary, shred larger pieces manually for even shreds.
  4. With a Stand Mixer: Place the cooked chicken in the bowl of a stand mixer. Using the paddle attachment, turn the stand mixer on low speed. Allow the mixer to shred the chicken in about 15-20 seconds.
