  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup beef stock
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 2 tbsp liquid smoke
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp black pepper

Flavor Enhancers:

  • 1/2 cup apple butter
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp distilled white vinegar
  • 1 tbsp lime juice
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/2 tsp corn syrup
  • 1 tbsp anchovy paste

Instructions

  1. Heat the Saucepan: Heat a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Making the Roux: Add butter. Once melted, whisk in the flour. Cook for 3 minutes until thickened and bubbling.
  3. Prepare the Sauce: Combine beef stock, minced garlic, liquid smoke, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, apple butter, soy sauce, distilled white vinegar, lime juice, tomato paste, corn syrup, and anchovy paste in a bowl and whisk well.
  4. Combine and Cook: Slowly incorporate the mixture into the roux, whisking as you pour about 1/4 cup at a time. Allow the sauce to come to a low boil between additions. Simmer for 10 minutes until thickened.
  5. Serve: Once thickened, lower the heat to a simmer for 10 minutes, then enjoy over your favorite steak!
